Weekend Reading

Dear John,

For decades, Border Patrol has operated secretive units that have obstructed justice for migrants killed by border agents. Community groups, including AFSC, have been working for years to expose these unlawful units and shut them down. This year, the Biden administration responded, announcing it would disband the units—a victory in our ongoing work to stop abuses by Border Patrol. Read more from AFSC’s Pedro Rios [link removed] .

Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:

Highlighting humanity within the prison walls: [link removed] Earlier this summer, AFSC and partners launched Let Me Tell You [link removed] , a storytelling initiative to highlight the experiences of people serving life and long-term prison sentences. “Most of our stories have been told by prosecutors and police,” says Mark McCloud, who contributed his story to the project. “This project gives incarcerated men and women an opportunity to let members in society know who we really are.” (Concentrate)

What you need to know about Israel’s shutdown of Palestinian rights organizations: [link removed] Israel has shut down some of the world’s most respected Palestinian rights groups. This is a clear attempt to silence those who have exposed the government’s human rights abuses, writes AFSC’s Jennifer Bing and Mike Merryman-Lotze. Now the U.S. must act to protect Palestinian civil society and demand accountability from Israel.

How Israeli arms companies profit from attacks on Gaza: [link removed] In Israel’s military operations in Gaza, new technologies are routinely tested on Palestinians. That enables corporations to label certain arms as “battle-tested” in selling them to other nations, writes AFSC’s Keren Assaf. (+972)
