History makers in Croydon

Croydon Councillors Ria Patel and Esther Sutton standing in front of The Queen's Gardens sign in Croydon
We spoke with?Ria Patel (left) and?Esther?Sutton?who made history in May by becoming the first ever Green councillors in Croydon:
?
"We're thrilled to have been elected in a historic victory in Croydon for the Green Party, electing our first two Green Councillors: Esther and Ria - Ria being the youngest councillor ever elected in Croydon.
?
"Since our election, we've been very busy! A lot of our time has been filled with casework and fascinating meetings with individuals and organisations who are doing great work in the borough, like Croydon Citizens and Croydon Drop In, an organisation providing free support and counselling for young people.
?
"One win that we've had following on from casework we received about dangerous parking on the pavement and cycle lanes outside Fairfield Halls, our largest cultural venue, is that we have now got signs up about terms and conditions of the car park usage.
?
"At a full council meeting, Esther asked a question to the Mayor about climate resilience in Croydon, and Ria did their maiden speech.
?
"We both also helped with organising Pride in Croydon, which was a joyful Queer protest and celebration!
?
"Finally, we've been back out on the door step speaking with residents about local issues and how we can support them, as well as holding three successful councillor surgeries."

Greens become official oppostion in Richmond and Twickenham

Andr?e Frieze, Deputy Green Group Leader spoke to us about recent successful motions and how Green councillors are promoting novel forms of sustainable transport:
?
"Greens in Richmond and Twickenham were delighted to win five seats in May, an increase of two - keeping the seats where we already had councillors and breaking into new wards. We also became the official opposition as the Conservatives achieved only one seat - down from 11 in 2018.
?
"At the first Council meeting of the new term, we had two motions passed. The first related to the cost-of-living crisis and will identify what further help is needed by residents experiencing hardship, produce a cost-of-living action plan and consider allocating a proportion of reserves if greater resources are judged essential to support struggling residents.
?
"Our second motion was in support of the "Councils for PR" campaign for Proportional Representation by Make Votes Matter. Both motions were seconded by cross-party members and the cost of living motion passed unanimously.
?
"New councillor Chas Warlow showed off his commitment to sustainable transport by arriving at the Council meeting by paddleboard! Richmond is the only borough in London that spans both sides of the Thames and for Chas, SUP is the quickest way to get to our Town Hall.
