Economic

Dear John,

With the raging inflation crisis still crushing Montana families, President Biden's Administration now wants you to pay off someone else’s student loans.

Make no mistake: this student loan policy is a debt transfer from the wealthy and elite to hard working Montana taxpayers, and it’s simply unfair. This abuse of power is a slap in the face to folks who responsibly paid their debts, decided not to go to college, or those who made sacrifices and financial decisions to pay off their own loans.

Here are the facts:

  • A recent study estimated that “forgiving federal college student loan debt will cost between $300 billion and $980 billion over the next ten years.
  • Student loan borrowers in the top 60 percent of income levels will benefit the most from this policy.
  • Some policy experts estimate the Biden administration’s student loan policies could wind up costing taxpayers roughly $2,000 on average.
As your voice in the United States Senate, I will keep pushing back on this radical agenda from President Biden's Administration and my colleagues across the aisle. Throwing fuel on the inflation fire, ballooning the national debt, and forcing Montanans to pay off the wealthy’s student loans can only hurt Montana families. I will do everything in my power to oppose this irresponsible action.

Sincerely,

Senator Steve Daines
