john xxxxxx,
One of my proudest accomplishments is co-founding the Yellowstone County Area Human Trafficking Task Force, the largest human trafficking task force in the state of Montana. This issue is deeply important to me, which is why I find it to be outrageous that my opponent, Representative Matt Rosendale, was one of seven state senators to vote against strengthening Montana’s human trafficking laws back in 2015.
The bill had bipartisan support, including from Republican Attorney General Tim Fox. Among other provisions, the bill allows victims of human trafficking who are charged with prostitution to protect themselves from charges if they assert that they are a victim of human trafficking. As a result, more victims have been able to come forward without fear of prosecution.
After the bill passed, we have seen human sex traffickers get longer and harsher sentences, keeping our communities safer.
In the past, I worked with the Montana Department of Justice, the FBI, and the United States Attorney’s Office to end human trafficking in our state. I created and hosted conferences and training events to educate the public, schools, and government agencies on issues of human trafficking, community organization, and leadership.
