Dear John,

As your representative, it’s my job to help keep our communities safe. Part of this duty is to support law enforcement against threats of violence as well. Over the past year, we’ve witnessed an appalling rise in attacks against the law enforcement officers who protect and serve our communities. That’s why I’ve signed on to cosponsor the bipartisan Protect and Serve Act – to enhance penalties against individuals convicted in assaulting a police officer. This bill will:

  • Create enhanced federal penalties for anyone who targets law enforcement officers and purposefully harms them during a federal crime. This applies to attacks on federal officers or attacks on state or local officers if the attacker or officer crosses state lines, uses a channel of interstate commerce, uses a firearm or weapon that traveled in interstate commerce or if the act impacts interstate or foreign commerce.
  • Create a penalty of up to 10 years imprisonment for someone who attacks and injures an officer and a penalty of life in prison for someone who kills or kidnaps an officer

This bill would ensure that anyone who chooses to target law enforcement officers will be held accountable for their actions.

Here are some other highlights from the week:

Securing support for public safety
The No. 1 responsibility of any elected official is to keep our communities safe. I am proud to have secured more than $500,000 for the Goodhue County Sheriff's Department to help them respond to emergencies and keep us safe.

Affirming my commitment to helping seniors age with dignity
This past Sunday was National Senior Citizens Day. I am committed to ensuring that our seniors can age with dignity. Here’s some of what I have accomplished so far:

Ensuring strong ties between Congress and our Armed Forces
Last week, Corey, a member of my staff and an Army Veteran, was able to join other staff members in the MN delegation in training exercises at Camp Ripley to connect with service members and ensure a strong partnership between Congress and our Armed Forces.

Behind the scenes with Rep. Craig:

This week I am happy to share with you that my liaison to the agricultural community in the Second District, Les Anderson, was recognized by KDHL radio as Southern Minnesota’s Ag Ambassador of 2022. Les farms in Dakota and Goodhue County and is the former President of the Minnesota Corn Growers. As a self-proclaimed Angie-Craig-Republican, Les is invaluable to my commitment to be an independent voice for Minnesota.

It's been great catching up with you again this week – and I hope you all get to enjoy the start of the Minnesota State Fair!

Until next time,
