Big news

Hi John,

Last week was huge.

One email alone (the one about AOC’s shoes) raised us $1,063, thanks to you!

Now I want to share some amazing news: two generous supporters stepped forward to lend us $5,600 (the max they’re allowed to) to help us buy the canvassing tool I told you about last week. The campaign will pay the remaining $1,200 upfront, and we’ll pay back the loan at $500 per month.

This is a huge gift (thank you — you know who you are!), and it will let us get the canvassing tool set up this month, so we can hit the ground running in January.

Now I want to be totally upfront and let you know what our monthly expenses are to keep the campaign going, including paying back the loan, paying team members, printing lit, hosting the website, and other expenses: $10,850.

We have 16 days left in December, and we’re 44% of the way to our monthly goal. Every day for the rest of the month, we need to raise at least $381.32. That’s very doable, but it means I need your help right now.

Can you donate $27 — or whatever you can afford — to help us meet our monthly expenses?

This is a lean campaign because I refuse corporate PAC and lobbyist money, unlike my opponent Derek Kilmer, who has taken $417,000 from corporate PACs in this election cycle alone.

Our money comes from baristas, computer repair people, seasonal workers, post office clerks, and people on fixed incomes. We watch every dollar we spend, because every dollar is precious.

Look at what Kilmer has spent money on in this election cycle alone:

  • $300,000 to the DCCC, which is currently blacklisting consultants from working with me.
  • $25,000 to the WA State Democratic Party, which is currently blocking me from using their canvassing tool (even though I’m a Democrat).
  • $11,924.10 in catering to one of his fundraising consultants, Molly Allen Associates, which proudly states on its website that it specializes in “D.C. and PAC Fundraising.”
  • $5,940.00 to the Yellowstone Club, a golf resort in Montana (he classified the purpose of the site rental as “administrative” 🤔).
And the list goes on.

Our campaign, on the other hand, is a grassroots campaign, and we don’t have $5,940 to spend on golf resorts, even if we wanted to.

In the interest of transparency, I’ve written you this email to let you know how much we have and how much we need. Please donate here to help us meet our expenses this month:

P.S. Here’s an ad Kilmer ran this summer. The hypocrisy is just too much.

Kilmer had the gall to run an ad against big money in politics with two scary 😱 Republican billionaires in the image, yet Kilmer himself belongs to the so-called “Problem Solvers Caucus,” which is literally funded by Republican billionaires.

He’s taken $182,203 from big pharma. $240,126 from insurance companies. $29,000 from General Dynamics, a defense contractor profiting off ripping children from their families and putting them in cages.

Yet he’s describing himself as a leader on campaign finance reform? Are you kidding me?

This kind of hypocrisy is why I’m running for Congress: we need Democrats who follow through. I’ve spent my entire life following through on my progressive values: as a human rights observer in an indigenous Zapatista community in Mexico, as a commissioner on the Tacoma Commission on Disabilities, as a court-appointed special advocate for kids in foster care in Pierce County, and more.

When I say we need to get big money out of politics, I mean it. I don’t take big money—I’m funded 100% by the grassroots like you. Please chip in if you can, because we’re currently only 44% of the way to our monthly goal:
