Friend,
By this point, you probably know that I like going to fairs. They're a great place to meet people and make a political pitch - and more politicians need to meet people and make a pitch, rather than relying on advertising or Big Media-driven fear mongering.?
?
That fear, and the anger it generates, is unfortunately alive and well. My counterpart running for State Assembly District 3 (roughly Tehama, Butte, Glenn, Sutter, and Yuba) had his sign vandalized the night before the fair opened. Someone took a sharpie to his sign, writing "FJB" and drawing devil horns on his face.?
?
Is it juvenile, yes. However, it speaks to a subset of right-wing voters who hypocritically preach the values of "freedom of speech" and "property rights" even as they vandalize the property of someone they disagree with. To steal a phrase from Hilary Clinton, these vandals truly are "deplorable."
?
Make no mistake, most GOP objections to "cancel culture" are just projection. The people on the right complaining the loudest about "snowflakes" on the left are the first to go yell at a school board when their kid brings home a book that challenges their conservative point of view.
We've seen what GOP majorities do in states they control - such as Florida's "Dont Say Gay" Law. They don't want to hear opposing points of view. Democracy cannot survive censorship and we cannot allow them to win elections until they realize that.
