Dear John,
No one wants email from Donald Trump that they didn't sign up for. No one.
But if Google implements their new plan, everyone will get every email Trump wants to send no matter how many times you click spam, delete, or unsubscribe.
That’s because Google is on the verge of launching a pilot program that would allow federal campaigns, party committees and leadership PACs to send unsolicited spam without consequence[1], inundating our inboxes with emails from politicians we did not sign up for and do not want -- including Donald Trump. In essence, spam filters will no longer apply, and people who’ve chosen not to opt in for emails can receive them ad infinitum, a scenario ripe for potential misinformation campaigns to flourish.
Google is responding to intense pressure from Republicans who claim they’re being treated unfairly by spam filters biased against conservatives, a charge Google denies and for which Republicans have no proof.
Here’s the deal, if Republican pressure led to this decision, then our pressure can stop it. Join me in sending a message to Google demanding they stop the political spam plan now!
The real reason Republicans are finding their campaigns blocked from inboxes might be because they’ve been caught scamming supporters. After all, the Republican National Committee and the Trump campaign issued more than 530,000 separate refunds worth $64.3 million to online donors after tricking supporters into monthly donations.[2]
The January 6 Committee revealed that after the election, the Trump campaign continued to scam supporters with the “Big Lie Rip Off,” raising more than $250 million for an “Official Election Defense Fund” that never existed.[3]
Republicans could play by the rules, like everyone else does. But that’s not how Trump’s Republican party works. Instead Republicans in Congress introduced the Political Bias in Algorithm Sorting Emails Act, sent threatening letters to its CEO and filed a complaint to the Federal Election Commission.[4]
The bottom line is, if Google implements this program, the more email a candidate or campaign can afford to send, the more they’ll clog up inboxes at the expense of the people you want to hear from, like family, friends, and organizations like ours.
Emails will be dominated by those who can afford to blanket anyone’s inbox -- like Donald Trump -- squeezing out everyone else and there won’t be anything we can do to stop it. That’s why we have to act now. If Republican pressure made this happen, we can stop it. Add your name now.
If you think managing your inbox now is hard, this would make it impossible.
Thank you for speaking up today.
