Friend, This week, President Biden announced his executive action to “cancel” student loan debt. Let me be clear: you can’t cancel student loan debt, you can only transfer it to someone else. Not only is this executive action illegal, it is wrong. Truck drivers, veterans, farmers, electricians and plumbers shouldn’t have to pay for someone else’s degree. Those who have sacrificed and worked hard to pay off their own student loans shouldn’t be on the hook for others' debt. Unfortunately, that is exactly what President Biden is forcing hardworking Americans to do. By cancelling student loan debt, the Biden Administration will further drive up the cost of tuition, incentivize students to take out loans they can’t afford to pay back, and unfairly punish those who have chosen to enter the workforce right away. I will look at every option available to push back against this plan and ensure Iowa taxpayers aren’t footing the bill for someone else’s college degree. We need to put a check on President Biden's and Speaker Pelosi's wasteful spending habits and reckless agenda. Best, Hearing from Iowans This week, I was out on the road meeting with Iowans in Winneshiek, Howard, Mitchell, Worth, Allamakee, Clayton, and Fayette Counties! The Spectrum Network (Winneshiek County) At The Spectrum Network in Decorah, I learned about their work to ensure those with disabilities and mental illness can lead fulfilling lives and enter the workforce. They are a force for good in the community! Featherlite Trailers (Howard County) It was great to visit Featherlite Trailers in Cresco. They manufacture trailers that are used by many in the agriculture industry. We discussed the increased cost of construction materials and their efforts to retain workers. L.R. Falk Construction's Duenow Quarry (Mitchell County) We toured the Duenow Quarry owned by L.R. Falk Construction in St. Ansgar. They specialize in the custom crushing and delivery of limestone products and told me about the importance of standing strong against government overreaches like WOTUS. We also discussed the importance of conservation on quarry sites. Child Time Daycare Center (Worth County) We visited Child Time Daycare Center in Northwood. They told me about the struggle to find qualified workers and manage their budget with costs constantly increasing. Child care workers are the workforce behind America's workforce, and I am grateful to those who dedicate themselves to caring for children. Veterans Memorial Hospital (Allamakee County) At the Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, we talked about my legislation to improve access to maternal health care services in rural areas. I'm grateful for their efforts to provide health care to veterans in rural communities. Community Bank of Oelwein (Fayette County) It was great to visit with the team at the Community Bank of Oelwein and members of the Oelwein Events Corporation this week. Community bankers are critical to our small town economies here in Iowa and help ensure small businesses and entrepreneurs have the capital they need to succeed. I also received an update on the Oelwein Event Convention Center and how it will attract new jobs to the area. Alpine Communications (Clayton County) I enjoyed touring Alpine Communications in Elkader and learning how to splice fiber! We talked about their efforts to bolster rural broadband and ensure everyone has reliable internet access. Their team also told me how federal regulations, inflation, and supply chain issues are driving up the cost and time for projects. Upcoming Telephone Town Hall Next Thursday, September 1st, at 7:00 PM CT, I will be holding a telephone town hall to connect with Iowans and answer your questions. Hope you can join me! Back to School! It was back to school for Max and Jax this week. The end of summer is always bittersweet. I hope all students, parents, and teachers have a great school year. Iowa State Fair Highlights We had a great time at the Iowa State Fair last week. Check out some more photos from our time at the fair - we are already counting down the days until next year! Community Highlights My team attended the ribbon cutting for the newly built Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust branch in Marion. Congratulations!
