 John, today is Women’s Equality Day. Championed by feminist giant Bella Abzug in 1971, this day commemorates the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment on August 26, 1920. While ratification was a huge step forward, as an Afro-Latina woman, I can’t help but feel excluded. Women of color could not vote in Virginia until more than four decades later with the passage of the Voting Rights Act. Rather than simply celebrating today, we need to take a hard look at our history, and commemorate the centuries-long struggle for true equality in America. In every generation, courageous women and men have fought to give us all the right to vote. Even with their shining example though, we falter.
