John,
Our democracy is not for sale.
According to a new report, the roughly 750 billionaires in the U.S. are increasingly using their personal fortunes and the profits of connected corporations to drown out regular voters’ voices and elect hand-picked candidates who further rig the nation’s economy -- especially the tax system -- to make their wealthy donors even richer.
These billionaires spent $1.2 billion in the 2020 elections and have given $89.4 million in donations to shady Super PACs in the first 16 months of the 2022 election cycle.
We don’t have hundreds of millions, much less billions, of dollars to fight back. What we have is much greater: we have people power, and that includes you.
Just last week, our volunteers helped send thousands of letters to voters in Florida, ahead of their primary. We’re writing letters and calling voters in Pennsylvania and Georgia to provide them with the correct information needed to vote in the midterm elections, and we’re setting up voter ID clinics to help voters fight back against voter suppression laws and make sure every vote is counted.
We’ve expanded our Voter Engagement Campaign and hired new staff and none of that could have happened without your unwavering support. Could you make a contribution of $5 today to help up continue the fight?
These billionaires are using their extensive unearned wealth to elect extremists, dangerous politicians who advocate for cutting Social Security and Medicare, passing more voter suppression laws, and eviscerating the social safety net.
Congress has introduced the Billionaire Income Tax Act that would tax the richest 0.01% on their wealth gains. When it passes, it will be a game changer, driving funding for the most important programs and support in our nation’s safety net and finally making the ultra-wealthy pay their fair share in taxes like everyone else.
It’s an important reform, but it won’t go into effect before elections in November. That’s why we have to make sure our voices are heard at the ballot box, so we can send fighters for human needs to Congress that will get the job done.
Donate $5 today to fund our Voter Engagement work to ensure every eligible voter is able to have their voices heard at the ballot box.
Thank you for all you do,
- Debbie
