Dear John,
Women’s Equality Day was established by Congress on Aug. 26, 1971, to commemorate the 19th Amendment that gave women the right to vote.
While today should be a celebration of liberty and equality, American women now have less freedom than their mothers and grandmothers.
With Roe v. Wade overturned, extreme Republicans are now plotting to criminalize abortion in all 50 states - even in cases of rape, incest, or if the mother's life is at stake.
They are even threatening a nationwide ban on birth control.
While these extremists move to punish and control women, I am taking action to defend a woman’s right to reproductive health care. That's why I voted to pass critical legislation that includes:
- The Women’s Health Protection Act: Legislation to once again make the protections of Roe v. Wade the law of the land.
- The Ensuring Women’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Act: Legislation stopping extremists from criminalizing, fining or suing women who exercise their constitutional right to travel across state lines to obtain an abortion.
- The Right to Contraception Act: Legislation to guarantee the right to obtain and use birth control.
Today and every day, I remain committed to stopping extremists from achieving their goal of criminalizing women’s reproductive and healthcare freedoms in Northeastern Pennsylvania and across the country.
