If you’re like us and were glued to the summer TV hit, the January 6th Select Committee hearings, you saw the shocking evidence of how Trump and key officials in his administration attempted to strong-arm state legislators into putting up fake electors and changing election outcomes.
If voter suppression is basically all the ways that anti-democracy extremists try to limit whose ballot gets cast and counted before & during an election, election subversion is all about the schemes and machinations after voting has already occurred to enforce an outcome other than the one that voters decided on.
In 2020, of course, the duly elected winner, Joe Biden, took office and became the president. That was largely because enough officials in jobs like Secretaries of State, Governors, and state legislators resisted the pressure to overturn the election. The Republican plan in 2022 is to elect enough Big Liars and MAGA loyalists to those jobs that the outcome could look different in 2024, no matter what voters decide. On top of that, the Supreme Court is taking up a case next term which would provide state legislatures with complete control over election administration. Yikes.
This is a big problem. And in the subject line, we promised you a solution.
There isn’t an easy one, but we know it starts by building power in the states (sound familiar?) On Tuesday, August 30th at 5pm PM/8pm ET, we’re hosting a panel with our friends at Sister District, titled “The Insurrection will be Decentralized - Election Subversion: The Role of State Legislatures in the Fight for our Democracy.”
