This week, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced they will waive late-filing penalties for those who file certain 2019 or 2020 returns on or before September 30th, 2022. The IRS is also refunding those who already paid late penalties which are expected to be paid by the end of September. This step is being taken to allow the IRS to focus its resources on processing backlogged tax returns and taxpayer correspondence to help return to normal operations for the 2023 filing season. Note this does not apply to filings for 2021 as the current tax year is still ongoing.
Additionally, the IRS is providing penalty relief to banks, employers and other businesses required to file various information returns. To qualify for relief, the IRS' notice states that eligible 2019 returns must have been filed by August 1, 2020, and eligible 2020 returns must have been filed by August 1, 2021. Please go to IRS.gov for more information.
Our office has recovered over $1.3 million in refunds since the beginning of 2022, if you need help accessing your tax refunds please go to malinowski.house.gov/help-federal-agency.
