August continues to be one of my favorite months of the year because I get to spend so much time at home in Rochester. This week, I had the opportunity to celebrate some historic milestones and pay a visit to local organizations who are doing critical work to support families here in our community. Read more below!

As we near the end of Black Business Month, I was proud to recognize Rochester’s longest-established African American business, Latimer & Son Funeral Directors, and celebrate 100 years of business.  Their family-owned business has stood the test of time and continues to provide high-quality funeral and mortuary services to families with dignity and compassion. On behalf of the entire Rochester community: thank you for 100 years of dedication and service to our community.

This weekend, I was also honored to present a proclamation honoring the 50th anniversary of St. Josaphat’s Ukrainian Festival. Now more than ever, it is important to come together in support of Ukrainian families here in our community and around the world, and I am grateful for everyone’s dedicated work to ensure the festival was a success. Here’s to the next 50 years! Slava Ukraini!

 Addressing Food Insecurity 

Everyone should have access to healthy, reliable meals—but sadly, too many families in our community struggle with food insecurity. Organizations like the Irondequoit Community Cupboard play a critical role in uplifting those in need by providing emergency food assistance. This week, I had the opportunity to stop by and thank their dedicated volunteers for the extraordinary work they do.  Supporting Older Americans 

I enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with residents at St. Ann’s Community on Wednesday! We discussed the landmark legislation recently passed by Congress that will significantly lower prescription drug costs for seniors and make healthcare more affordable. This will ease the financial burden on these residents, many of whom are living on fixed incomes. St. Ann’s provides a critical service to older members of our community, and I am grateful for their dedication and partnership. Together, we are working to ensure families can age with the dignity and respect they deserve.
