John,

There are serious due process concerns surrounding the government’s Institutional Hearing Program (IHP).

The little-known program expedites the deportation of immigrants who are serving time for criminal offenses. A key problem with the IHP is that most noncitizens lack access to attorneys who can represent them in their deportation hearings. These cases often involve complex legal issues. Having a lawyer can make a difference for immigrants in the IHP.

We just released a fact sheet on the program’s history and what is known about the way it works.

Understanding the program is an important step in advocating for full and fair proceedings for all immigrants.

Sincerely,

Jorge Loweree
Policy Director

P.S. – If you’re interested in this fact sheet, check out the litigation we just filed demanding the government release key information about the IHP.
