Poynter will present Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein with the Poynter Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Journalism at our annual Bowtie Ball gala for their dogged reporting that changed the course of American history and fortified journalism’s role in a free society 50 years ago.
The story of Watergate was not only the highest expression of journalism’s calling as a “first draft of history,” but this body of work has stood for generations as a historical record that in America no one — not even the president — is above the law, and that journalists are essential to a working democracy. Woodward and Bernstein found records, knocked on doors, managed multiple sources, told the stories straight — without fear or favor — and in the process changed a nation and inspired thousands of people to become journalists.
You’re invited to join this celebration of journalism. Come be entertained by live music and lively programming, delighted by cameo appearances, and immersed in a celebration of local news, the power of fact-based expression and The Washington Post reporters’ relentless investigation that changed American democracy. The pair's contributions will be elevated throughout the evening; Bernstein will attend the event in person and reflect upon his investigative reporting during an interview on stage. |

Meet Poynter and PolitiFact in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 28, just days before the U.S. Supreme Court’s new term for a special evening with author and CNN legal analyst Joan Biskupic. The event will bring the nation’s top journalists, fact-checkers, media executives and supporters of accountability journalism like you together for an enlightening conversation about the realities and misunderstandings surrounding the highest court in the land.
Biskupic will share her insight from more than 30 years covering the court to explore where popular knowledge of this hugely powerful and quite controversial institution may be misunderstood or the subject of misinformation.
Together, we’ll try to sort out fact from fiction about the nine justices, their constitutional oaths and the information — good and bad — swirling around the rulings of the country’s most debated and controversial topics like abortion, gun control, climate protection and religious freedom. We’ll also discuss the stakes of the court’s secrecy in chambers, and what happens when politicians, pundits and citizens try to fill in the unknowns with suspicions, agendas or theories.
Everyone who purchases a ticket to attend this event will also receive total access to all three days of the online festival of fact-checking, United Facts of America, Sept. 27-29.

Join Poynter at the largest performing arts center in the Southeast on Oct. 11 for an evening with Julie Pace, senior vice president and executive director of the AP.
Pace, who spent some of her earliest years in journalism at the former Tampa Tribune, will also discuss the honor — and challenges — of leading the 176-year-old organization’s global news operations in an environment rife with mis- and disinformation.
