PROGRAM UPDATES:
Volviendo A Casa:
(New Program: "Returning Home")

Juan Lopez Gonzalez was a 41-year-old father and loving husband from Colonia San Cayetano, Municipio del Bosque located in Chiapas, Mexico. Juan was a family man with four children, ages 2 to 18. He decided to migrate to the U.S in order to help pay for his family’s debt and to provide a better future for his kids.

Juan began his journey with his brother and nephew, as they traveled to Tijuana and joined another group to attempt to cross the desert. His goal was to make it to Santa Rosa, CA, and work in the grape field as an agricultural worker. Unfortunately, during the hike, Juan began feeling bad and ultimately passed away. His brother and nephew stayed with him during his passing, and remained with his body, ultimately turning themselves over to Border Patrol. They were later deported back to Mexico.

Through our Volviendo a Casa program, we were able to coordinate with the Mexican consulate to pay for funeral expenses so that his family may say their final goodbyes. May he Rest in Peace.

We are devastated at the loss of another life; we continue to denounce the many policies at work at our southern border, which are the root cause of these tragedies, and continue to provide humanitarian aid to those crossing in hopes of preventing more deaths.

Familias Reunidas:
Starting the weekend with some good news: We freed another asylum-seeker from Peru! Rafael is the 118th recipient of our Familias Reunidas Bond Fund Program. He was incarcerated in the Imperial Regional Detention Center for two months. Rafael is 21-years-old, and will now start his new life in New Jersey.

Shelter Aid:

Our Shelter Aid program continues to provide holistic support to 14 shelters in Tijuana, feeding and assisting hundreds of migrants daily. Help us help migrant families as we cover rent, utilities, groceries, provide mental health workshops and services through our partnership with Psicologos Sin Fronteras, B.C. , and assist them through Title 42 exemptions helping present families at the border and much more.

Green Cards for Kids:
Our Green Cards for Kids program continues to find ways to halt deportation proceedings and achieve permanent residency for the children in our program. Thanks to your support Janet has received an Employment Authorization Document so she may now pursue a job while we help her receive her green card. We also started SIJS(Special Immigrant Juvenile Status) procedures for Alexis and start processes to acquire a green card!

Title 42 Exemptions

We received another lovely video to lift our spirits this week! We continue our work with Title 42 exemptions, a process exclusive to asylum seekers who have been in our supported shelters. This past Saturday, we assisted asylum seekers from Jardin de las Mariposas.

Jardin de las Mariposas provides housing and assistance to members of the LGBTQI+ migrant and asylum-seeking community, as well as HIV+ persons. Many of the people who have been presented at the border under Title 42 exemptions and are part of the LGBTQI+ community have been identified through this shelter.

Thank you for your continued support and helping us bring this small but incredibly important relief at the border to the families who have been waiting up to two years for a chance to present their asylum case. Link in bio to donate.

It is a privilege to thruhike and while I’m doing it, I love raising funds for organizations that are doing important work.

Border Angels is an organization I’ve been following & supporting for some years. They assist with reuniting families, support 17 shelters in Tijuana, help pay with funeral expenses and transporting those that have passed away crossing the border to their home countries, provide water drops, and more. Please check them out as they are helping many people at the US/Mexico border. If you are not able to donate, please share the post as support.

The trail is around 210 miles but I will be hiking around 240 as permits were hard to get so I’m starting at a different trailhead and will be making my way north to Tumanguya (aka Mt Whitney) & ending at Yosemite Natl Park.

Thus my fundraising goal is $240 & would love to raise more with your support!

News Spotlight:

2 children dead, baby in critical condition after attempted border crossings
Two children are dead and a baby is in critical condition after being pulled from the Rio Grande during separate attempts to cross into the United States from Mexico on Monday, officials said. A 3-year-old boy died and a 2-month-old baby was taken to hospital in critical condition after they were pulled from the river Monday afternoon, Eagle Pass Fire Department Chief Manuel Mello said in a statement.

Mello said the children were being "brought across" the river as part of a group of migrants when the incident unfolded. It occurred around 1 p.m. local time (2 p.m. ET) on Monday, according to WOAI-TV, an NBC affiliate based in San Antonio.

Mello said Border Patrol agents were close by when the incident unfolded and assisted with the rescue. By the time fire rescue arrived on the scene, CPR was already being administered by agents, Mello said. The 3-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene, while the baby boy was transferred to a San Antonio hospital, Mello said.

Mexico’s National Immigration Institute said a 5-year-old girl also drowned while attempting to cross the Rio Grande to enter Texas on Monday.
