Dear friends,
California should prioritize housing for people, not cars. That's why we're proud to co-sponsor AB 2097, which will eliminate expensive parking mandates in transit-rich neighborhoods across the state – mandates that worsen climate pollution and drive up the cost of new housing.
Unfortunately, opponents are going all out in their efforts to kill this bill before the legislature adjourns on Wednesday.
They're hoping to flood State Senators' offices with calls against AB 2097. I'm writing to tell you that now is the time to get loud and tell the State Senate to vote YES on AB 2097.
Will you make a quick call to your State Senator in support of AB 2097 and help end expensive, polluting parking mandates?
Make the call!
Eliminating costly parking mandates will give Californians more choices about whether they want to pay for parking, or have lower-cost housing in walkable, transit-accessible neighborhoods. Studies show parking mandates can add $40,000 or more per parking spot to new projects, driving up rent.
California cities are currently over-producing parking largely because of rules that require the construction of parking with each new home or business, even when there is no need for additional parking.
AB 2097 increases housing choice and will make it easier to provide lower-cost, walkable- and transit-accessible housing across the state.
This year, AB 2097 not only made it out of the Senate Appropriations Committee – it's now co-authored by that committee's chair, Senator Anthony Portantino, who worked with bill author Assemblymember Laura Friedman to craft a version that stands a good chance of passing the State Senate.
We're closer than ever before to eliminating many of these expensive, polluting parking mandates that help make housing less affordable. That's why opponents are worried, and are mobilizing their own networks to contact State Senators in a last-minute bid to stop AB 2097 from passing.
That's where you come in.
Constituent calls make a huge impact in Sacramento, especially when a bill is ready for a floor vote. A final vote could happen anytime between now and Wednesday, and your voice could help play a decisive role in convincing your State Senator to support its passage.
So, if you're excited about ending California’s affordability crisis and bringing down the cost of homes, now is the time to raise your voice in support of AB 2097.
Make the call!
Thank you so much for your advocacy, energy, and passion.
Gratefully,
Brian
