Journalists and legal experts are pouring through the newly released redacted FBI affidavit for the Mar-a-Lago search, but our worst fears about Trump’s post-presidential confidential document trove have already been substantiated: Everything from handwritten notes to files containing information about human intelligence sources (read: spies) and even records marked “not for foreign nationals” were all stored haphazardly at the former President’s Florida compound.

This is unacceptable, and the affidavit makes it hard to believe that these documents found their way to Florida from the White House because of oversight or incompetence. Whether Trump had nefarious plans or was simply trying to create as much chaos and confusion as possible, his actions directly threatened our national security. Our secrets and the lives of the American heroes who keep us safe were put in direct jeopardy by Trump’s actions.

Trump and his 147 allies in Congress are sure to double down on their baseless and often contradicting excuses for Trump’s behavior. We may even get a new conspiracy theory. But the affidavit contains one detail that makes it impossible to defend the former president sincerely:

For authorized officials to legally access these records, they would not only have to obtain the required clearance, but they would also have to do so from an approved Security Compartmented Information Facility, or SCIF. Mar-a-Lago was not authorized to store confidential documents, and no personnel at Mar-a-Lago was authorized to handle them. According to the FBI’s affidavit, many classified documents were unfoldered and haphazardly mixed in with other documents.

If you or I handled classified government materials carelessly, we’d face a lifetime in prison. If found guilty, so should President Trump.

We can’t allow The 147 to sweep President Trump’s actions under the rug by taking back the House and interfering with the Department of Justice.
