The first day of the rest of our lives together....

Hi Friend,

My determination to take some time off in these fading days of summer will be thwarted by more of the kind of breaking news developments we have seen all August.

But that doesn’t mean I’m not going to try.

I hope you get more than a few moments between now and when the business of fall swoops in to enjoy the best of what life has to offer.

Before I let you go, two things:

  1. If you missed Ryan Clancy’s rollicking Zoom session with hundreds of members of our community, you can watch it here.

  1. We need your help to fund our programs for the rest of this year. Would you please kick in the price of a semi-fancy cup of coffee – five bucks – to support the work of No Labels in 2022 and beyond?

You can contribute $5 dollars by clicking here.

Looking forward to reconvening with you all soon!

All the best,

Liz Morrison
Co-executive director

Five Facts on China's Economic Slowdown
By No Labels

As the Chinese Communist Party prepares to grant Xi Jinping a third term as the nation’s leader later this year, cementing his status as China’s most powerful leader since Mao Zedong, the country’s economy is sputtering due to COVID lockdown policies. With China importing more than $2.3 trillion in goods each year, that slowdown is being felt far beyond China’s borders.

The Urgent Need for Climate Change Bipartisanship
By Joe Lieberman

The climate change legislation signed by President Joe Biden this month was a historic political accomplishment and a big step forward in America’s capacity to help stop the warming of the Earth. Climate change threatens our security, our prosperity and even our freedom as much as terrorism did after 9/11. But like climate change bills I worked on in the Senate for years, it did not win bipartisan support. This needs to change.

Touting Latest Bipartisan Win, Sen. Cornyn Shrugs Off GOP Critics: ‘Legislating Is Not for Sissies’
By Jeremy Wallace & Austin Bureau

Even as he is being censured and criticized by some Texas GOP officials, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn said on Friday during a stop in Austin that he’s not going to stop working with Democrats when needed to pass meaningful legislation.

Bill Cassidy Pitches the Benefits of the Infrastructure Bill That He Supported
By Tyler Bridges

Cassidy said that spending from the $550 billion bill will allow shippers to send more goods from Louisiana’s ports down the Mississippi River, strengthen the state’s eroding coastline, harden the energy grid against hurricanes, rebuild roads and bridges and expand high-speed, affordable Internet in small towns.

In US Politics, Moderates Still Run the Show
By David A. Hopkins

As recently as last month, when it looked like Congress might not pass reconciliation legislation this year, conventional wisdom in Washington suggested that Biden was a failing president who should even reconsider seeking a second term. But once the IRA unexpectedly secured sufficient support, Biden enjoyed an immediate reputational rebound as a master of legislative achievement; a few hyperbolic responses even compared him to Great Society-era Lyndon Johnson.

Only Bipartisanship Can Defeat Authoritarian Aggression
By Dan Sullivan & Daniel Twining

U.S. Presidents Joe Biden and Donald Trump don’t agree on much, but their administrations together have executed the most important pivot in U.S. foreign policy since the 9/11 terrorist attacks: centering grand strategy around systematic great-power competition with China and Russia. For the first time since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the United States has genuine rivals for international leadership with the ability to potentially defeat U.S. forces in military conflict.
