Hi JOHN –
It's been a while since I checked in with you, and I wanted to talk about today, Women's Equality Day.
Today commemorates the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. It's also a time to reflect on the hurdles that women had to overcome in the suffrage movement and the barriers that still exist for women today.
Republicans have brought the fight for women's rights to the forefront of history once again. Every day, women across the country are under attack – being forced into decisions on voting, healthcare, education, and financial insecurity against their will.
When Eric and I discussed his passion to run for Congress, and that he would be running against one of the most right-wing Republicans out there, no less, I thought he was dreaming.
But, when he told me his motivation, ensuring that our daughter (and everyone’s daughter) does not have to grow up in a world where her Representatives have no respect for her or her choices, I reconsidered.
We need more elected officials who stand up for the rights of those in their communities, no matter their gender identity. We need to elect someone who puts people first, like Eric, who understands that they need to listen to the communities, like women, that are most affected by policies created in Washington.
Since the beginning of his career, Eric has had that mentality – of listening, collaborating with others, and doing what's right. I know that with his leadership, Pinellas County and our country will be a safer place for every woman and everyone.
But, we also know what's at stake if he doesn't win. That's why I'm asking, will you chip in $10, or whatever you are able, to support his campaign and the fight for women's rights?
