Good afternoon friend,
200 million people around the world now have access to assisted dying. Over the last five years, states in Australia, further states in the USA, and New Zealand have implemented an assisted dying law that is safe, fair and compassionate. Britain must be next. Take a quick look at our new video featuring Australian lawmakers to see how change happens:
We recently had the pleasure of meeting with Australian MPs Fiona Patten and Alex Greenwich who forged the path for change in their home states of Victoria and New South Wales. They agreed that law change on assisted dying needs 3 key ingredients:
- Public support
- Political support
- Time to pass the law
There’s a crucial piece of the puzzle missing in this country - time to pass the law. Our most recent attempt to change the law in Westminster wasn't voted down - it simply wasn't given the time to progress and be voted upon.
Dignity in Dying is calling on MPs to back a commitment to parliamentary time in party manifestos. Then MPs can listen to their constituents, interrogate the evidence and change the law.
Just like our elections, any debate about assisted dying needs to be free and fair. To achieve this MPs need adequate time to consider all the issues, respond to any challenges, and work collaboratively towards a law that is safe, fair and compassionate.
We’re reaching a critical time - it’s great to have you on board.
All the best,
