Women's Equality Day, thoughts from children in our Survivor Care, things to look for in anti-trafficking organizations, and much more.

THIS MONTH AT

Today is Women’s Equality Day! At Love146, whether it’s donors, volunteers, staff — or victims of trafficking — women and girls are disproportionately showing up, representing 84% of survivors in our care and over 70% of donors and volunteers. Happy Women’s Equality Day from all of us at Love146. Thank you for continuing to think and act alongside us to make a better world for the next generation.

At Love146, we’re often asked, “What should I look for as I research various organizations in the field I may want to support?” In order to answer this question, we’ve compiled this list of things you may want to look for – and things you may want to be wary of. These are based on hard lessons we have learned and our 2 decades of experience working in this field. As we keep evolving, we’re committed to listening and as such this list will likely grow and evolve as we to continue to learn.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN ORGANIZATIONS ([link removed])

Love146 took part in the U.S. State Dept. Trafficking in Persons Office listening session on the role of technology. Our Chief Programs and Strategy Officer Erin Williamson shared her thoughts on tech training. She noted, "we need to start online [safety] education in elementary school, and we need to have some of these harder conversations about how kids might be approached online, because they are being approached. If they don't know how to respond appropriately, then they're not going to know how to respond in a manner that keeps themselves safe."

Forbes recently published an article ([link removed]) encouraging people to give strategically to charities during this rocky economic time. One of the options mentioned was stocks: "By donating long-term appreciated stock to charity, you will generally be eligible for [additional] tax benefits—making this a more strategic approach than donating with cash or credit." Love146 has outlined many ways to support the work to end child trafficking, including stock donations. We even have a sample letter for your broker about donating stocks to Love146.

Are you a college student – or do you know someone going to college this fall? We've seen students make an impact in a variety of ways by forming volunteer teams on their campuses. Get inspired in this blog ([link removed]) by seeing what college students at University of Florida, University of Toronto, and Yale University have been doing. And if you're interested, email [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) to start the conversation about what a volunteer team on your campus could look like.

Children in our Survivor Care have shared what your support means to them as they go back to school. A 13-year old in our Survivor Care has shared, “Love146 also helped me to see the significance of education because I was able to realize that education is just like a weapon that protects a person against ignorance. When I finish my studies, my dream of becoming a flight attendant will come true, I will also be able to raise my family from poverty and I can also protect myself from bad people because I can distinguish between right and wrong.”

According to recently updated guidance from the Associated Press ([link removed]) on the word grooming: “Some people use the word ‘groom’ or variants of it to falsely liken LGBTQ people’s interactions with children, or education about LGBTQ issues, to the actions of child molesters…” Their advice to journalists was this: “Do not quote people using the term in this context without clearly stating it is untrue.”

At Love146, when we say “grooming” we’re talking about the process predators use to lure a child into relationship, gain trust with them, and prepare them for sexual exploitation.

When most people imagine child trafficking, they imagine a seedy guy bringing a young girl into his white van. However, this is a destructive stereotype – often perpetuated by the media, movies and TV shows, and sometimes even anti-trafficking organizations themselves. In reality, trafficking is much more nuanced. In order to understand the different ways child sex trafficking actually takes place, here are some important facts.

Recently, a youth soccer club in Houston decided that instead of featuring a sponsor, they would put the name “Love146” on the front of their jerseys. Hundreds of young people will be representing this cause, spreading awareness, and supporting solutions to end child trafficking. Legacy Soccer Club ([link removed]) has a huge focus on building character and players who make a significant impact on their local community and beyond. Our co-founder Rob Morris recently got to spend some time with their team, and received a check for funds raised by this community to help support other children and keep them safe from exploitation. We’re blown away by their generosity and passion. At Love146 we are so inspired seeing people and communities show up with their unique gifts. We ask folks “What is it that you love to do that can make a difference? What is it that you CAN do to make change?” The families at Legacy Soccer are doing just that.

Join the team! Love146 is hiring positions across our organization, including a Senior Grants Manager and a Connecticut-based Survivor Care Social Worker. We support our team in many different ways, such as sabbaticals and generous time off, health benefits that we pay for, and program models that prioritize relationships. We'd love to have you!
