For decades, the corporate news media have covered politics with a goal of providing “balance” between left and right, presenting the news from the point of view that it deems the “reasonable center.”
This is, to put it simply, complete nonsense.
In the words of Robert Reich, “There is no more left vs. right. It’s now democracy vs authoritarianism. There is no reasonable
center.”
In fact, when one side of a debate bases its arguments on facts and evidence, and the other side on simply lies, it’s misleading and dangerous to present these views as equally valid. There’s no moral equivalency between climate science and climate denial. There’s no centrist compromise between democracy and election denial.
To save the future of the planet and our democracy, we need journalism that has the courage to take sides between facts and falsehood, democracy and authoritarianism.
That’s what Common Dreams was founded to do, but if we don’t meet our fundraising goal by September 1, we simply will not have enough money to fund our news operations through this fall’s critical midterm elections.
