Join FEMA Region 1 on September 8th and September 15th from 1PM – 3PM EST for a two day webinar series addressing the ongoing substance misuse crisis and the impact that it has on emergency and disaster response.

This event is completely open to the public and is free! We will be joined by a dynamic set of speakers who will cover a wide range of issues, including the following:

 The intersection of substance misuse and emergency response
 National and local substance misuse and overdose trend data pre/post pandemic
 Fundamentals of trauma and addiction related science
 Understanding the risk and protective factors for substance misuse
 Action: How to build community coalitions of trust

Important note: Day 2 is a standalone session. You do not need to have attended Day 1 in order to attend Day 2.

Day 1: Introduction to Substance Misuse and Trauma Science for Emergency Managers
Thursday, September 8th, 1PM – 3PM EST

The shifting landscape in emergency management since the COVID 19 pandemic has created a situation where we cannot ignore the ongoing health crisis of substance misuse in our communities. The health crisis of substance misuse has many components, but in order for us to better respond to the needs of individuals struggling with addiction, we need to have a foundational understanding. This learning session will include an overview of the intersection between substance misuse and emergency response, a highlight of current health trends related to substance misuse, an introduction to the social determinants of health, and much more!

Day 2: The Risk/Protective Factors Associated with Substance Misuse and Action Steps that We Can Take to Build Community Resilience
Thursday, September 15th, 1PM – 3PM EST

This session series will focus on the risk factors associated with substance misuse, highlighting some of the most important leading indicators for substance misuse. In addition, we will cover the protective factors for substance misuse so that we can better learn how to prevent more exposure to the indicators that lead to an increase in substance misuse. The session will wrap up with a dynamic panel discussion focused on building coalitions of community partnership that will lead to more resilience in this space.
