Hi John,
I'm Broward County School Board member and Run for Something alum Sarah Leonardi.
As a former teacher who worked in the Broward School District for nearly ten years, I love this time of year. School halls ring with chatter, shuffling notebooks, and young faces both eager and nervous for their first days and weeks of school.
While each school year brings promise, the last few years have brought new and greater challenges for teachers and students alike, especially here in Florida.
As students head back to the classroom, there are over 9,000 teacher and staff vacancies in our Florida public school system. Shrinking salaries, hostility towards teachers and curriculum, and (rightful) fears of school violence and the pandemic have created a dire vacuum.
Yet, Republican politicians like Governor Ron DeSantis would rather become Fox News darlings by turning our classrooms into a front of their culture wars.
At the center of all of it, it's the students who are the ones losing out the most.
School board races, traditionally overlooked by the political establishment, are ground zero for these battles. Supporting and electing candidates who care about education is one of the most powerful ways to support teachers and schools and fight back against extremist attacks.
Run for Something is one of the only organizations making this kind of serious, nationwide investment in school board races like mine.
That's why I'm asking — as a candidate, as a proud member of the Run for Something community — please chip in

I went into teaching over ten years ago with an earnest desire to make a difference. I grew up in the Middle East, living almost a decade in Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. My mom was a school teacher, and these experiences taught me how powerful and transcendent a good education is in the lives of many.
Education is the doorway to change, both in the lives of individual students and in the future of our country.
When Republicans slash teachers' salaries and undermine our public schools, it's a direct attack on an equitable and free society. That's why the work of Run for Something is so critical, especially right now when our schools are literally under assault.
