Federal Judge Orders DOJ to Release Redacted Version of Affidavit Used in Mar-a-Lago Raid

Reuters: A federal judge in Florida on Thursday ordered the U.S. Justice Department to publicly release a redacted version of its affidavit that underpinned the FBI’s Aug. 8 search of former President Donald Trump’s home. U.S. Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart ordered the redacted document’s release by noon on Friday. His order came just hours after a Justice Department spokesman confirmed that prosecutors had submitted a sealed copy of its affidavit with proposed redactions to the judge (Reuters). CNN: The media outlets said the brief should be made public with any redactions necessary to protect the ongoing investigation. Additionally, the media companies asked for the judge to order that, going forward, any documents the Justice Department files under seal in the transparency dispute also be filed publicly with the appropriate redactions (CNN).

Jonathan Turley Blasts Garland’s DOJ for Leaking Parts of Affidavit Justifying Mar-a-Lago Raid

Katie Pavlich: George Washington University Professor and Democrat Jonathan Turley is blasting the Department of Justice for selectively leaking narrative bolstering portions of the affidavit used to justify the raid on President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home. DOJ is pushing leaks to the media while also claiming the affidavit must be kept secret from the public (Townhall). New York Post: The Washington Post and The New York Times have published a series of leaks clearly designed to put Donald Trump and his team on the defense in the media, including claims that he was hiding sensitive nuclear-weapons material and details on how the search was prompted by video surveillance outside the storage room at Mar-a-Lago (New York Post). Jonathan Turley: Attorney General Merrick Garland has had at least four opportunities to take modest steps to assure the public on the department’s motives and means in this controversy. This is his fifth opportunity and he should not let it pass (Twitter).

Mainstream Media Begins to Report John Fetterman’s Health Problems

Katie Pavlich: Since winning the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate back in May, John Fetterman has been hidden away from public view. Just days before voting began he suffered a stroke and nearly died. He was in the hospital when the votes were tallied on Election Day.  Now, when he does show up at rare campaign events, it’s for just a few minutes. Usually wearing an oversized sweatshirt and basketball shorts, his appearance is sloppy. His words are even more incoherent and usually Democrat friendly media outlets are starting to take notice (Townhall). RNC Research: CNN: “Legitimate questions do remain about Fetterman’s health” after disastrous campaign events. Fetterman was “often halting in his speech, occasionally dropped words mid-sentence” (Twitter). CNN: Fetterman’s speech was halting at the events in Erie and Pittsburgh, with the candidate sometimes taking long pauses and dropping words (CNN).

Job Creators Network Seeks Legal Action Against Biden for Student Loan Cancellation

Loan forgiveness also does nothing to solve the underlying issue of college being far too expensive. Just the News: The Job Creators Network, a small business advocacy group, is exploring legal challenges to block the Biden administration’s student loan bailout. “This move is fundamentally unfair to the tens of millions of hardworking Americans who never went to college and are now forced to shoulder loan forgiveness for the consultant class,” group President and CEO Alfredo Ortiz said Wednesday, shortly after Biden’s announcement. “It’s also unfair to those who have scrimped and saved to repay their student loans. They already paid back their student debt, and now they will be forced to pay back the growing national debt as a result of this bailout” (Just the News). RNC Research: Tax Foundation’s Will McBride on Biden’s student debt bailout: “It’s going to make our inflation crisis worse” (Twitter). NBC: An Education Department memo, produced in the final days of the Trump administration, concluded that there was no authority to cancel debt on a broad basis (NBC).

Governor DeSantis Weighs in on Student Debt Forgiveness

New York Post: Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis slammed the Biden administration’s college debt relief plan Thursday, arguing that taxpayers who don’t seek higher education shouldn’t foot the bill for those who do… The White House estimates that up to 20 million Americans could see their student loans completely written off as a result of the order. But DeSantis said Thursday that the plan penalizes those who managed to pay off their college debts on their own (New York Post). Ron DeSantis: It’s unfair to force a truck driver to pay a loan for someone who got a PhD in gender studies.  Taxpayers shouldn’t be footing the bill for student loan relief and Biden’s order isn’t constitutional. If anything, universities handing out worthless degrees should be on the hook (Twitter).

Senator Marsha Blackburn Makes Unannounced Visit to Taiwan While Visiting Region

Fox News: Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., landed in Taiwan for an unannounced visit on Thursday, according to a source familiar with the trip. Blackburn is only the latest in a series of U.S. lawmakers to fly to Taiwan, a trend that has outraged the Chinese government… China has argued that visits by U.S. lawmakers infringe on America’s One China Policy, which states that the U.S. acknowledges the Beijing government as the sole government of China. China reacted to the previous August visits by launching live-fire military exercises surrounding Taiwan in an apparent rehearsal for an invasion (Fox News). National Review: Blackburn made the stop following a swing through various Pacific island countries, including Fiji, the Solomon Islands, and Papua New Guinea. In a statement released just ahead of her arrival in Taipei, she didn’t mention her plans to visit Taiwan but did emphasize the importance of continued U.S. ties with countries in the Indo-Pacific region. “The Indo-Pacific region is the next frontier for the New Axis of Evil,” said Blackburn. “Meeting with leaders from Fiji, the Solomon Islands, and Papua New Guinea was an important step in showcasing America’s commitment to the region and expanding our strategic relationships” (National Review).

DHS Officially Shuts Down Disinformation Board After Three Months of Being Paused

Remember, the board was only “paused.” NBC: The Department of Homeland Security said Wednesday that it has shut down a disinformation working group that generated controversy earlier this year when Republicans denounced it as an effort to curb free speech. In a statement, DHS said Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas decided to terminate the Disinformation Governance Board following a recommendation from the Homeland Security Advisory Council, which provides the DHS secretary with independent advice (NBC). CNN: Nina Jankowicz, the disinformation expert with experience working on Ukraine and Russia issues, resigned in May after the department paused the board. Her appointment had quickly drawn condemnation from GOP lawmakers and right-wing media, who pointed to her past tweets and statements regarding Hunter Biden’s laptop and Christopher Steele, the author of the so-called Steele Dossier (CNN).

Trending on Twitter: “LGB, Drop The T” Disavows Trans Agenda

Daily Wire: Earlier this month, the hashtag #LGBdroptheT trended on Twitter. Users who said they identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual criticized progressive gender ideology and attempted to distance themselves from transgender activists. Those tweeting under the hashtag expressed their frustration that, in their view, the transgender movement has co-opted the gay rights movement and turned it into something unrecognizable. A slew of gay activists posted under the trending hashtag that transgender activists must be iced out of the movement because they have crossed a line (Daily Wire). Avril Peppard: #LGBWithoutTheT. No forced-teaming with homophobic, misogynistic & anti-woman groups (Twitter). Radio Host Dan Joseph: #LGBDropTheT trends On Twitter As Many In Gay Community Reject Transgender Ideology (Twitter).

Trigger Laws Banning Abortion Go Into Effect in Texas

Texas Tribune: Performing an abortion is now a felony punishable by up to life in prison in Texas after the state’s trigger law, which has only narrow exceptions to save the life of a pregnant patient, went into effect Thursday. The law was “triggered” when the U.S. Supreme Court issued its judgment in Dobbs v. Jackson, the case that overturned Roe v. Wade and allowed states to set their own laws about abortion. Abortion clinics across Texas had already stopped performing the procedure, fearing prosecution under state laws that were on the books before Roe v. Wade (Texas Tribune). Townhall: In Texas, abortion provider Whole Woman’s Health made the decision to pack up its clinics and move to New Mexico, where abortion laws are lenient, after the Dobbs ruling. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which is the Mississippi clinic at the center of the Dobbs case, sold its building and will also move to New Mexico. Louisiana’s last three abortion clinics are closing their doors, but have not publicized where the clinics will relocate (Townhall).

Paul Pelosi’s Police Membership Card Revoked After Attempt to Receive Special Treatment During DUI Arrest

License and CHP Membership card, please. Spencer Brown: That’s because, to rewind a bit, Mr. Pelosi tried handing his 11-99 membership card with his ID to the officers who arrived on the scene after he had drunkenly wrecked his Porsche into a Jeep. Yet, his apparent attempt to use his financial support for the families of officers as a get out of jail free card didn’t work as seen on dash cam footage of Pelosi’s failed sobriety tests the night of his drunk driving crash. Unsurprisingly, the 11-99 Foundation said Pelosi’s “actions reflected poorly on the 11-99 Foundation and undermined our important mission” (Townhall). Fox News: Following the reports of Pelosi’s conduct during the arrest, a CHP 11-99 spokesperson said the group had opened an internal probe into his membership status but would wait to obtain all the facts of the case before issuing a decision. On Tuesday, Pelosi was sentenced to an eight-hour work program and three years of probation after he pleaded guilty in court to driving under the influence and causing injury (Fox News).
