Friend,

This week, New York’s 19th Congressional District held a special election. In 2020, President Biden narrowly lost the district, but on Tuesday, Democrat turnout surged Pat Ryan to victory. He outperformed the President by 1.5%.

As those of you who have supported us since the beginning know, fighting hard in every special election is key to defending our congressional majority. But this race was about a lot more than just one seat. Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chair and neighboring NY-18 Congressman, Sean Maloney, summarized it best:

“There are 222 seats in the House that are better in terms of the Biden vote than New York 19. That is the canary in the coal mine for what’s coming.”

Democrats need just 218 seats to hold the House. If NY-19 results hold across the country in November, Democrats might not just be competitive enough to win, but they might even be able to win with seats to spare.

One of the most iron-clad trends in American politics is that the incumbent party has an extremely minimal chance of defending Congress after winning the White House. In fact, since 1946, it’s only happened once. But rules were made to be broken, and these midterms have been shaping up to be truly historic since January 6th, 2021.

Voters are watching the January 6th Committee expose the GOP’s anti-democratic machinations and growing increasingly frustrated with Republicans’ focus on extremist legislation. Americans know that this election year is different, so historical precedents may be about to get overturned at the ballot box this November.

Friend, the special election last week showed that if Democrats get their message out and turn out voters, we will defend the House. Donate now to help us keep the momentum going through Election Day.
