We’re on the brink of a major milestone, John: This could be the year that all 50 states will have FINALLY sent a woman to Congress. And Emerge Vermont is bringing in that victory!

So today, we want to introduce you to our incredible alums from the state of Vermont – including U.S. House candidate Becca Balint, Vermont Governor candidate Brenda Siegel, Vermont Attorney General candidate Charity Clark, and Vermont Secretary of State candidate Sarah Copeland Hanzas – who are advancing progressive leadership in the state and our nation and building momentum toward real gender equality at every level of our government.
Becca Balint is the first woman and first out gay person to serve as the Vermont Senate President Pro Tempore. She is the daughter of an immigrant dad and a working-class mom. She has led the caucus through a successful fight for the most progressive reproductive freedom legislation in the nation, and she worked tirelessly behind the scenes to pass the boldest climate justice bill to date in Vermont.
Brenda Siegel was first introduced to the American political system in 2001, when she worked with U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders in Washington D.C.. She eventually was made a member of the State of Vermont's Public Transit Advisory Commission as well as DCF's General Assistance Program Working Group. Brenda serves as the chair of the Newfane Democratic Committee and a delegate to the Windham County Committee, according to her governor campaign website.
Charity Clark was hired as an assistant attorney general in the Public Protection Division by former Attorney General Bill Sorrell in 2014. She is currently the chair of the board of her town library, and she serves on the boards of First Unitarian Universalist Society of Burlington and Burr & Burton Academy. Drawing on her own experience as a mother, in 2018, she helped found the Junior League of Champlain Valley's Diaper Bank, which has distributed over a million diapers statewide to families.
Sarah Copeland Hanzas grew up in Corinth and completed her teacher training at Upper Valley Educator Institute. After staying home with her three children, Copeland Hanzas ran for the legislature in 2004. During her tenure in the House, Copeland Hanzas has served as a House majority leader, a vice chair of the House Health Care Committee, and as chair of the Government Operations Committee.

These powerhouse women are community leaders, teachers, and moms working to ensure that all of our families – and all of our neighbors – have the safety, support, and resources we need to thrive.
