Friend,
Ever since President Trump renegotiated NAFTA and signed the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), I have been eager to support it. After months of asking Speaker Nancy Pelosi to bring USMCA to the House for a vote, we finally will have our chance.
Next week, the House is expected to take a vote on legislation implementing an updated trade agreement with our two largest trading partners. This is great news for Americans and our economy. The International Trade Commission projects the USMCA will add over 176,000 jobs and $68.2 billion to the overall economy, but USMCA is especially great news for Minnesotans. More than 250,000 of Minnesota’s jobs and $72 billion in Minnesotan exports are related to our current North American trade agreements, and 51% of Minnesota’s agricultural exports go directly to Mexico and Canada. The agriculture, manufacturing, medical, and mining industries are the lifeblood of our State’s economy, not to mention they also make up the majority of Minnesota’s North American exports.
Because of USMCA, American farmers and manufacturers will soon have a leveled playing field to compete internationally, increase employment, and create high-paying jobs. Mexico and Canada will remain important trading partners for Minnesota and the United States, but Americans will now have better opportunities, expanded markets, and more certainty under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement.
I am thankful that President Trump and his administration delivered on his campaign promise to help American farmers, manufacturers, businesses, and families by terminating and replacing NAFTA. Now it’s finally time for Congress to do what it should have done months ago and sign this agreement into law.
Sincerely,
|
