As Pennsylvania youth return to school, it’s crucial we keep their civic engagement and education in mind — because right now, we’re failing them.
Only 1 in 4 of the Commonwealth’s high school students who are eligible to vote are actually registered. That’s the statewide average. But when you look at the areas surrounding Allegheny and Philadelphia counties, that number is down to less than 15%. Areas such as East Allegheny, McKeesport, and the City of Chester are under 7% registration rates for high school students who are eligible to vote.
Low youth participation is disastrous for our democracy and young people alike. And this is why centering and empowering young constituents is one of the New Pennsylvania Project’s top priorities. Not every high school student goes on to college. We must engage students in grade school to ensure they make their voices heard at the ballot box.
John, it’s no accident that our youth have such low rates of registration and engagement in the democratic process. As we’ve now heard the GOP openly admit in taped recruitment “summits,” they’re intentionally fighting to make and keep it that way.
