Friend,

Today, Texas’s trigger law officially goes into effect, completely outlawing abortion without exception in the state. We’ve known this day would come, but that doesn’t make it any easier. My heart breaks for millions of women across Texas.

We grieve for those who will be forced to carry a pregnancy to term. For those who will face prosecution for helping others seek healthcare or seeking it for themselves. For those who will lose their lives attempting to exercise their fundamental right to bodily autonomy.

I’m furious at the extremist conservatives on our Court who made this decision, the Republicans in Congress who refuse to codify abortion rights, and the state legislators who have whittled away at our right to choose for decades.

There are so many emotions to describe the pain we’re feeling. But despite the hurt and anger and grief, I still feel so much hope.

Texas Democratic Women have been at the heart of our movement for reproductive liberation since the beginning. Texas attorney Sarah Weddington, a TDW member herself, argued and won Roe v. Wade nearly 50 years ago.

This fight is generations long. Our mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers fought it, and now it falls to us, so that our daughters and granddaughters will not need to carry it forward once we’re gone.

The best way we can regain and expand women’s rights to reproductive bodily autonomy is by electing Democratic leaders right here in Texas. The Supreme Court has put the power to protect abortion in the hands of the states, so let’s show them just how powerful our state can be.

So I’m asking: can we count on you to split a $7 contribution between the Texas Democratic Party and Texas Democratic Women to elect pro-choice leaders in Texas this November?

It’s because of supporters like you that we can have hope. When we stand together in this fight, I know we can create a Texas that our daughters will be proud of.

I believe in you. I have faith in you. And I’m counting on you.

Thanks so much,

Kassandra Elejarza
