It’s hard for me to believe that five years have passed since Rohingya refugees began fleeing persecution in Myanmar and flooding into Bangladesh.

During that crisis, we had one goal: Ensure access to reproductive health care, including abortion, for as many refugees as possible. The need was so great, and so many women and girls were arriving in camps with horrific stories of sexual violence—many pregnant as a result.

I’m incredibly proud of how quickly we were able to train health providers and set up high-quality care in the refugee camps. And I’m equally proud of our persistence in the five years since. Through floods and landslides in the camps and the incredible challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve ensured reproductive health services are always available.

Our work is far from done, and we’re now focused on making sure this essential health care continues to be available to the refugees who call these camps home.
