Greetings from Caryl Zook
Thank you all for welcoming me in my new position as Operations Coordinator for the Democrats of Indian River County, and for your patience as I learn to do all that Stacey and her dedicated volunteers have done so well. I appreciate the opportunity to help Democrats be effective in these times of political turmoil. After 12 years in South Florida, this Midwesterner escaped the traffic and noise and in 2014 bought an Indian River Farms Cracker Cottage in need of some TLC. I have two sons and two grandsons and they are all still in Broward County. But I enjoy Vero Beach, the pristine beaches, live music, great restaurants, the vibrant arts community and free parking!
Also please welcome our new intern, Harrison Parker. He is majoring in Political Science at Indian River State College and he is enthusiastic about recruiting and engaging young voters.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

For those who work on our elections, thank you
Letters Orlando Sentinel

This is a letter to the employees of the Orange County Supervisor of Elections office as they prepare for the grueling marathon of the upcoming election cycle.
Start by kissing your family goodbye. You may not be spending any significant amount of time with them until Thanksgiving. You will work long days and lose sleep and be on your feet for hours.
Prepare yourselves to be harassed and ridiculed. Your integrity will be questioned. Your patience will be tried. Your motives will be discredited.
How will you get through it? By knowing in the most difficult moment of your hardest day that you are the last line of defense for democracy. No matter how small your role, you are participating in an honored (if somewhat flawed) system that sustains the United States of America.
If you do not hear this again this year, thank you! Your sacrifice is recognized. Your dedication is appreciated. You are an integral part of democracy.

Democrats outperformed polls in two House special elections in upstate New York, winning one and losing the other by single digits.
In New York City, Jerry Nadler defeated Carolyn Maloney in a battle between powerful, long-serving House Democrats after a redrawn map combined their districts.
In New York’s suburbs, Sean Patrick Maloney, chair of the Democratic House campaign committee, beat Alessandra Biaggi, a progressive state senator endorsed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

NASA: We are ‘go’ for launch of SLS rocket
Emre Kelly
Florida Today
NASA managers at Kennedy Space Center have granted permission for the massive Artemis I Space Launch System rocket to launch next week to fly to the moon, The 322-foot rocket’s first launch at 8:33 a.m. EDT Monday, Aug. 29 will mark the opening of a two-hour window.
'We are ‘go’ for launch, which is absolutely outstanding,' Bob Cabana, the agency’s associate administrator, said during a readiness review briefing Monday night. 'This day has been a long time coming.'
Cabana, a former astronaut and director of KSC until last year, was referring to SLS’ decade-long, multibillion-dollar development that has been delayed several times. But now the agency is ready to fly the rocket and its Orion capsule on a complicated month-and-a-half-long mission designed to push multiple systems to their limits.
'I want to put this in perspective,' Cabana said. 'This is a test flight and not without risk. We’ve analyzed the risk as best we can and we have mitigated as best we can. We are stressing Orion beyond what it was originally designed for in preparation for sending it to the moon with a crew.'
At liftoff, the Boeing-built SLS will become the largest, most powerful rocket in the U.S. fleet. Its main objective, launching the Orion capsule attached to the top, will be aided by the solid rocket boosters and four RS-25 main engines. All four RS-25s are leftovers from the space shuttle era.
Orion won’t fly with astronauts for this mission known as Artemis I. After liftoff from Kennedy Space Center, it will autonomously leave Earth and enter lunar orbit, then return for splashdown in the Pacific Ocean before mid-October. Lockheed Martin assembles and tests the capsules here on the Space Coast.
From liftoff to splashdown in the Pacific Ocean, the capsule will spend 42 days in space, or more than double the lifespan for which it was designed. That means more exposure to things like radiation and micrometeoroids – but also more opportunities to determine the capsule’s readiness to host a four-person crew for the next mission.
'Twenty-one active days with four crew is one of our key design parameters,' Howard Hu, NASA’s Orion program manager, told reporters Monday. 'This mission allows us to push a lot of capability. The long-class mission that we’re talking about, 42 days, will allow us to stress a lot of systems and check out those systems.'
If the test flight is successful, Orion will be tasked with running a similar mission known as Artemis II no earlier than 2024. That one will include astronauts. Then, Artemis III is slated to put two astronauts – including the first woman – back on the lunar surface sometime after 2025.
If Monday’s attempt is scrubbed, teams have two backup opportunities: Sept. 2 at 12:48 p.m. (two-hour window) and Sept. 5 at 5:12 p.m. EDT (90-minute window). If more time is needed, several opportunities are available through the end of the year but will depend on the nature of the scrub and what work needs to be done.
If SLS launches on time next week, Orion should return to Earth Oct. 10. If either of the backup dates are needed, splashdown would push to Oct. 11 and 17, respectively.

FDBWC Turning Florida Blue
On Sunday, August 28th @ 6:00 pm, there will be an opportunity to hear directly from school board members. Ron DeSantis and Marco Rubio can be defeated, but it will require all of us know the issues and making sure our neighbors, family members, coworkers, church family and friends turn Florida Blue and save our democracy. You can use the link below to register and please share with others.
Indian River School Board incumbent Jacqueline Rosario and newcomer Cynthia Gibbs will face off in November. In the 4-way race Rosario received 47% of the vote and Gibbs received 26% according to the elections office.
Gibbs has many years of experience teaching in Vero Beach elementary schools and has said she would focus on advocating for support staff; and hiring, developing and maintaining highest quality educators; and creating and maintaining strong, healthy relationships between students, families and the schools.
Rosario claimed to be endorsed by DeSantis and had backing from Moms for Liberty, the local Republican Party and Friends of Ron DeSantis, his political action committee. Her focus is on parental rights and involvement in the curriculum, campaigning against COVID-19 precautions and censoring books in school libraries.
School Board incumbent and longtime educator Teri Lee Barenborg beat Thomas Kenny for the District 4 board seat Tuesday, according to final, unofficial results from the Supervisor of Elections Office.
