My name is Danielle Steele Williams. If you've been following FAMM, you probably got an email from my son Kendall last year around this time. He wrote to you on behalf of all children with parents who are incarcerated to give you a glimpse of what it's like growing up with a mom or dad behind bars.
Today, I’m writing to you for the families who have been reunited, thanks to reforms FAMM has championed. The First Step Act included a retroactive increase in good time credit, paving the way for more than 150,000 people — including my husband, Keith — to get shorter sentences. Three thousand people were freed immediately. The crack cocaine sentencing law provision alone eliminated 12,000 years of unnecessary prison time for 2,000 people sentenced to much more time than they deserved.
Just last week, my family and I traveled to Washington, D.C., to join FAMM in thanking lawmakers who led the effort to pass the bill. It was the first time we were able to travel as a family.
Keith has been home for nine months now, but I still have surreal moments all the time. It's the simple things, like having him help me clean the house and thinking again and again, "I can't believe he's here." Or, recently, watching Kendall's face light up as his father stepped out of the car to pick him up from a football game at school. These moments mean everything to our family, and they're the reason we'll continue to support FAMM and advocate reform.
