Last week, we saw exactly what kind of legislation Republicans would enact if given the power to override my veto. At the request of GOP legislators, a judge reinstated a cruel law restricting abortion care in North Carolina.

It’s clearer than ever that abortion is on the ballot in November. I cannot and will not allow anti-choice Republicans to gain the supermajority they need to ban reproductive care outright.

Rachel Hunt knows what serving our state faithfully looks like: She’s the daughter of North Carolina’s longest-serving governor. Now, she is a member of the State House and is running to represent District 42, just south of Charlotte, in the State Senate. She’s a steadfast fighter for children and families and is a key supporter of expanding health care coverage.

Mary Wills Bode is an attorney, nonprofit leader, and lifelong North Carolinian. She’s now the Democratic nominee for the newly drawn State Senate District 18, north of the Raleigh-Durham area. Public service runs in Mary’s family; her mother is a former secretary of North Carolina’s Department of Health and Human Services, and her father is a retired Vietnam veteran and civic leader.

By supporting admirable candidates like Sydney, Rachel, and Mary, I believe we can block a Republican supermajority — and, who knows, maybe even break the GOP majority. As we saw in Kansas, anything is possible when committed Democrats stick together.
