John,

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) — more commonly known as food stamps — is this country's most important anti-hunger program. Unfortunately, it's on the chopping block.

Earlier this month, the Trump administration officially approved one of three proposed anti-SNAP rules that will cut nearly four million Americans from the food stamp rolls, including 290,000 Pennsylvanians.

It's like a plot out of a modern-day remake of A Christmas Carol. These policies would be cruel at any time of year, but moving to make them official at the start of the holiday season is just another level of heartless.

The Trump administration says that the restrictions will "move more able-bodied" food stamp recipients "towards self-sufficiency." That's absurd. What they aren't taking into account is the many SNAP recipients who are either trying to find work or face hardships that prevent them from doing so.

Let's be clear: President Trump's cuts to this critical food assistance will hurt our state's most vulnerable residents. No one should have to worry about going hungry just because they can't find work.

Thank you for standing with us,

John
