Dear John,
When the Supreme Court threw out Texas’ health and safety standards for abortion clinics in June 2016, but said that such protections could be enforced if there was sufficient evidence of the need for such protections, Americans United for Life was stunned by the Justices’ callous dismissal of Kermit Gosnell’s atrocities in Philadelphia and the record in Texas and across the nation! We knew that the Justices had tragically overlooked years of evidence.
Our legal team has conducted a lengthy investigation of abortion facility conditions to show that abortion is bad for women in so many ways. And helping judges, legislators, and the public understand that abortion is bad for women is key to preparing the background for a future test case to challenge Roe v. Wade.
This task was made all the more difficult by the lack of protective laws, the lack of regular state inspections, and the lack of public access to inspection reports in too many states, which would bring light to the shady world of largely unaccountable abortionists.
Who’s responsible for this public health vacuum? The Supreme Court.
In our groundbreaking investigative report, Unsafe: America’s Abortion Industry Endangers Women, we detail horrific abortion clinic conditions, documenting that 227 abortionists in 32 states were cited for more than 1,400 health and safety deficiencies between 2008 and 2016, including hundreds of significant violations of state laws regulating abortion businesses. Because of a lack of responsible reporting, abortionists in other states – like California – could not even be fully evaluated.
This report equips legislators with evidence of the need for health and safety standards, as well as support for calling for comprehensive abortion facility inspections in all 50 states.
And Unsafe: America’s Abortion Industry Endangers Women will play a critical role in the national conversation as the U.S. Supreme Court once again turns to consider abortion in March 2020—specifically Louisiana's "Unsafe Abortion Protection Act". We will never stop advocating for women and children, and for basic health and safety for every patient.
But we can not do this without you, and we ask that you share this report widely and make a gift today to support our continuing investigative work to inform the U.S. Supreme Court and the American people of the grim realities of abortion across our nation.
Let's make 2020 a Turning Point for Life!
