Fundamental rights and freedoms in Nicaragua are being curtailed by President Daniel Ortega's government.

By now, you may have heard about the arrest of Catholic bishop Rolando José Álvarez Lagos (along with other church leaders) after Álvarez openly criticized Ortega's regime. But this is only the latest in a series of alarming moves by the government aimed at consolidating power and restricting basic human rights.
