Dear John,

Today is the one year anniversary of the House passing the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2021, a historic piece of legislation that would strengthen voting rights and empower the government to fight voter suppression.

This landmark bill was named in honor of the late John Lewis, a fierce civil rights activist and Congressman who knew how important it was to protect our voting rights and the integrity of our elections.

The bill passed the House without support from a single Republican.

John, it couldn’t be any more clear: The radical right won’t stop until they weaken our voting rights and destroy our democracy.

As I’ve shared with you before, the fight to protect our democracy is personal to me. It’s what inspired me to attend the U.S. Naval Academy and serve as an officer in the Navy, to deploy at sea and to Iraq, and it’s what motivated my work at Pitt Cyber and the Brennan Center to defend our voting rights and elections.

And I’m not close to being done, John. I’m ready to get to Washington and defend our rights, and I won’t shy away from a fight with extremists who are willing to attack our freedoms and throw out our elections in exchange for power.
