On August 28, 1963, the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom took place in Washington, DC. It was the largest mobilization of civil rights advocates of its time.
Intended “to arouse the conscience of the nation,” as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. described it, the march was a monumental success. Seeing a Black-led, grassroots movement bring 250,000 people to the National Mall, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Now, nearly 60 years later, a Supreme Court conservative supermajority, constant Republican attacks, lies about the 2020 election and voter-ID laws have severely damaged those rights. We now have to fight for what King demanded that August day. The rights we have taken for granted – for six decades – are now under full-scale attack from the right.
The road ahead isn’t easy: it will require us to continue building power to protect our rights. We must confront structures and systems that stand in the way of safety, economic justice, and freedom for Black people. Color Of Change PAC was established to support candidates and policies at the local and national levels that protect the right to vote, transform the criminal justice system, and expand public safety. You can support work that builds independent Black political power with a $15 donation. Every dollar you give makes a difference in the fight against right-wing tyranny. >> [link removed]
This is the truth: Ahead of the November midterms, we need the momentum to win, but it’s going to take as many people as possible chipping in to get us across the finish line. John, that’s why your support matters. >> [link removed]
