Statement from Representative Adriano Espaillat in Recognition of Ukrainian Independence Day

Espaillat Renews Commitment Supporting Freedom of Ukrainians and Survival of Democracy

NEW YORK, NY – Today, Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) released the following statement in recognition of Ukrainian Independence Day and in support of the nation following six months of turmoil during Russia’s unprovoked war:

“Today, we recognize Ukrainian Independence day as Ukrainians fight for their continued independence and to save their nation,” said Espaillat. “President Zelenskyy and the people of Ukraine have displayed incredible bravery over the past six months and are undaunted in their determination to defend their democracy.

"Congress has led the effort to help Ukraine defend itself and must continue to do so until Russia finally ends this unprovoked war. In March 2022, I led a bipartisan effort to designate Temporary Protected Status for Ukrainians, which the Biden Administration implemented swiftly. In light of the grave atrocities reported, I introduced H.Res. 964 with Rep. David Cicilline, calling for Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Russian government to be held accountable for the ongoing violations of international law committed during the invasion of Ukraine – amounting to war crimes and crimes against humanity.

"We must do all we can to end Russia’s reign of terror as we know the dire consequences for freedom and democracy around the world if we do not. America will not allow Ukraine to lose this fight. Today, we reaffirm our commitment to help the Ukrainian people preserve their independence and to stand up for democracy around the world,” he concluded.

Representative Espaillat is the first Dominican American to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and his congressional district includes Harlem, East Harlem, West Harlem, Hamilton Heights, Washington Heights, Inwood, Marble Hill and the north-west Bronx. First elected to Congress in 2016, Representative Espaillat is serving his third term in Congress. Representative Espaillat currently serves as a member of the influential U.S. House Committee on Appropriations responsible for funding the federal government’s vital activities. NEW YORK, NY – Hoy, el congresista Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) emitió la siguiente declaración en reconocimiento del Día de la Independencia de Ucrania y en apoyo a esta nación luego de seis meses de crisis provocada por la guerra no provocada de Rusia:

“Hoy reconocemos el Día de la Independencia de Ucrania mientras los ucranianos luchan por su independencia y para salvar a su nación”, dijo Espaillat. “El presidente Zelenskyy y el pueblo de Ucrania han demostrado una valentía extraordinaria durante los últimos seis meses y han sido indomables en su determinación de defender su democracia.

"El Congreso ha liderado el esfuerzo para ayudar a Ucrania a defenderse y debe seguir haciéndolo hasta que Rusia finalmente ponga fin a esta guerra no provocada. En marzo de 2022, lideré un esfuerzo bipartidista para designar el Estatus de Protección Temporal para los ucranianos, que la Administración Biden implementó rápidamente.
