Governor DeWine Plants Northern Red Oak in Natural Resources Park

(COLUMBUS, Ohio)?Ohio Governor Mike DeWine today planted a Northern Red Oak tree in Governor?s Grove at the Natural Resources Park during the Ohio State Fair. DeWine is the seventh Ohio governor to add a tree to the grove.

?This is a long tradition of planting trees at Governor's Grove, and it's also symbolic of what we're trying to do here in Ohio -- investing in young people and investing in our state,? said Governor DeWine. ?It?s my honor to make this latest contribution to the grove, and I encourage everyone to visit this special place during their time at the State Fair.?

The Northern Red Oak is noted for its brick-red fall color and may reach 60 feet tall and 70 feet wide, making it a valued shade tree. It?s also an important hardwood for the Ohio timber industry and can be used for beams, railroad ties, furniture, and flooring. Ohio has the largest known Northern Red Oak in the country in Ashtabula County, at 92 feet tall and almost nine feet in diameter.

Ohio governors who have added trees to the grove include: Jim Rhodes (Cucumber Magnolia), Richard Celeste (Sawtooth Oak), George Voinovich (Burr Oak), Bob Taft (Tricolor European Beech), Ted Strickland (American Linden), and John Kasich (River Birch).

The ODNR Natural Resources Park is in the southeast corner of the fairgrounds and is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily during the Ohio State Fair, with most activities starting at 11 a.m. All the activities in the park are free with admission to the Ohio State Fair.
