1) The Left’s New War On Fertilizer Could Cause Mass Hunger And Starvation
Those over a certain age will recall that what gave birth to the modern “green movement” was Rachel Carson’s book “Silent Spring” about how DDT was killing all the birds (stet). Not only was it completely fatuous, but the resulting war against pesticides contributed to the death of millions of poor people in third-world countries from the horrors of Malaria.

We might be facing a similar nightmare scenario as many advanced and supposedly educated countries are now declaring war on fertilizer – you know the stuff that makes plants and crops grow.

The Wall Street Journal reports that “Canada is urging farmers to reduce fertilizer emissions to curb greenhouse gases, triggering a backlash from farmers and concerns amid global food shortages.” Other developed nations have declared "emissions from agricultural sources" a threat to humanity, and they have set a goal of reducing 30% by 2030 and eventually ban nitrous oxide emissions from fertilizer.

The net result could be a catastrophic decline in the aggregate food supply, and people may starve.

As Doug Casey, an investment guru and scholar, notes in his latest Newsletter: “The invention of synthetic nitrogen is what created the real “green revolution”- which was mass food production that allowed humanity to grow from a population of under 2 billion to almost 8 billion within a century.

His warning is worth heeding: “The hobgoblin of climate change is being used to obtain full and total control over the entire food industry. Quite a feat.”

We worry that this nutty idea will travel south from Canada to fill the brains of American intellectuals, who will also endorse crippling domestic food production. What happens when the planet’s two largest agriculture exporters cut their food output?

World food security is already at dangerously low levels as the chart below shows.

First, the greens set out to destroy our modern energy sources (so far they are succeeding), and now they want to restrict global food production.

We will say it again: climate change fanaticism is the world’s greatest existential threat to the health and prosperity of the planet.

2) Student Loan “Forgiveness” For Deadbeats
President Biden is expected today to bail out millions of student loan borrowers by paying off $10,000 of outstanding student loans for every borrower with an income below $125,000 per year. (We thought Congress had the power of the purse?)

Why do they call this giveaway “forgiveness?” It’s a typical Washington weasel word. The only effect of this policy is to shift the cost of college from the students to the taxpayers – almost half of whom never even graduated from college. How is that “fair?”

Our friend Rich Vedder put it well:

My crude estimate is that the moratorium on student loan interest payments alone in the 28 months since it began has lowered federal revenue by more than $200 billion. This, at a time when the federal debt exceeds $30.5 trillion. Even a modest student loan forgiveness program likely would involve $400 billion to $500 billion in additional lost government revenue. Someone, someday, must pay these debts unless some future administration decides to default on the government’s obligations or, perhaps more likely, reduce their magnitude through deliberate inflation.”

3) The Next Big Judicial Battle Will Be Over State Supreme Courts
Progressives on the North Carolina’s Supreme Court voted 4 to 3 last week that because the state’s legislature was – in their opinion – unconstitutionally gerrymandered, Republican lawmakers may have lacked the power to approve amendments to the state constitution and put them before voters.

The ruling threatens to strike down two amendments Republicans passed in 2018—one to require photo voter ID and another to cap any state income tax at 7 percent. State House Speaker Tim Moore decried the ruling as a "judicial coup" and vowed to fight the case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

But North Carolina voters, along with electorates in states like Michigan and Ohio, will have a chance to rein in such excesses this November when judicial elections will decide the ideological majority of the state supreme courts. If conservatives win one more seat in any of those states, the make-up of the new courts will favor pro-liberty outcomes.

4) Big Brother Wants To Set The Temperature Of Your Home By Regulating Your Thermostat
We mentioned last week that Spain is placing strict limits on how much air conditioning they can us le to cool their homes during this Summer’s heatwave. The government will not allow home and business thermostats to be set below 80 degrees Fahrenheit because of energy shortages.

It turns out Spain is no outlier. Italy has launched “Operation Thermostat” to ensure that schools and public buildings aren’t cooled in the summer to below 77 degrees Fahrenheit. The French government is also demanding that public buildings remain warm in the summer and cold in the winter.

5) Chart Of The Day: How Are You Enjoying The Chinese Battery In Your New Tesla?
While Europe has surrendered its energy sovereignty to the Russians, America is surrendering ours to China.
