John,

Today marks 6 months since the Russia-Ukraine conflict began. This means:

6 months of witnessing over 10 million people flee the country, mostly women and children.

6 months of resounding food shortage and grain trade blockade, causing a ripple effect of inflation, hunger and malnutrition across the world.

6 months of families being torn apart, forced to make unimaginable decisions no family should ever have to make.

But what gives me hope today is seeing the global community of people like you come together to support Ukrainian families when they need us most.

Nowhere in the world has seen such a quick mobilization of resources as in Poland. Our teams have been on the ground there identifying humanitarian needs since early February — which is only possible because of generous supporters like you.

Natalia is a cash and basic needs officer who can tell you the importance of cash assistance both as an IRC staff member and one of the 5 million people who fled Ukraine to find safety in Poland.

Natalia spent 12 hours at the border on a cold, winter day in March with her two small children. After resettling in Poland, she came across a position for the IRC as a cash and basic needs officer and applied.

"[Cash assistance] is the best option. Because people can choose for themselves what they need in a particular moment since the necessities of different people are different as well," Natalia said.

"Someone might need medicines, someone might need food and someone might need to pay for accommodations, for example. So the flexibility of such cash assistance is really good and it's really important to give this kind of choice to our clients."

Your support has meant that we could quickly assemble teams at the onset of this crisis to reach Ukrainian families with:

Emergency assistance including evacuation efforts for women and children.
Medical equipment for teams operating at border crossings and refugee reception centers.
Mobile services for mental health and psychosocial support to families living in shelters and transit sites.
Emergency cash support so that families can buy the basic necessities they need, right when they need it.

John, this is what people like you make possible. When you support the IRC, you are helping reach Ukrainian families and beyond with the critical resources they need to survive, recover and rebuild their lives.

6 months is a mark of time no one wanted to pass. This war has gone on far too long. But thanks to supporters like you, we're committed to staying as long as we're needed.

Lastly, I I'd love to share why people like Natalia are especially grateful for you:

"I would like to say thank you to all who contribute to this assistance, to all who support the Ukrainians here and around the whole world in these difficult times. Thank you so much."

I am especially grateful for you as well!
Thank you so much,

— Hank, IRC Ukraine Response
