Dear Reader,

Are you a teacher? If yes, this one’s for you.

I spent two years teaching special education in North Carolina before I went back to school for journalism and dedicated my career to telling the stories of kids like the ones I taught: brilliant young people with unique personalities who are too often underserved and ignored.

Like you, I get sick to my stomach when I think about how unevenly we distribute our country’s resources and what that means for some children. That’s why I wrote about the lack of mental health services for children in the rural South. That’s why I investigated the underperforming and under-monitored child care system in Mississippi. And that’s why I love to highlight solutions, like the program in California that aims to improve the mental health of preschool teachers and, ultimately, the children they teach.

Look, I get it. People are constantly asking more of you. And how much more do you have to give? But I’ve got a way for you to keep important coverage like ours alive without too much effort.

Just tell us you’re a teacher. If you can donate as little as $5 and check the box saying that you’re a teacher, it will give us the opportunity to tell bigger funders how much the work we do matters to teachers. We’ll add you to our special teacher list, send you a small token of our appreciation and include you in our count to big funders. (And if you can't afford $5, just reply to this email, tell me you're a teacher and I'll put you on our teacher list anyway.)
