When the FBI raided Mar-a-Lago, it was for a simple purpose: to obtain top secret, highly classified documents Trump took from the White House and refused to return as required of every president by law.

Republicans' responses have been haphazard and dangerous . Almost immediately, they started calling for the FBI to be defunded and made racist, completely false claims about President Obama. Many members of Congress called this a “political witch hunt.”

We need our elected officials to be law-makers, not law-breakers.

This isn't the first time Trump may have broken the law. While in office, he reportedly ripped up documents, flushing them down the toilet and instructing White House staffers to place them in "burn bags" earmarked for destruction.

As we learned during the January 6 committee hearings, Trump's clear defiance of the law is something Trump's own staff warned him against. Still, he has evaded accountability for his repeated illegal actions and his attacks on our democracy. Until now.
