Game and Fish continues restoration of Mystery Lake in the Teton Wilderness
Mystery Lake Fish Stocking
Wyoming Game and Fish Department stocks over 5 million fish annually. Fish are stocked by truck to most locations, but also by boats, helicopters, ATVs and occasionally horses. Stocking fish by horseback in Wyoming likely began in the 1930s, since the majority of alpine lakes did not originally have fish. Fish were often transported in milk cans on the backs of horses in large packstrings! They are no longer packed in milk cans, but horses are still used. *Join the Jackson crew?as they stock 750 Snake River cutthroat trout into Mystery Lake. [ [link removed] ]*
A pound of cure; keeping hatchery fish healthy?
Keeping fish healthy at WY fish hatcheries
The introduction of an infectious disease or invasive species could be devastating to a fish hatchery and immensely expensive for the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. Last year the department raised and stocked more than 6.5 million fish in 368 waters across the state. The majority of fish ? cold-water varieties of trout ? come from the department?s 10 hatcheries and rearing stations. *To protect its investment, Game and Fish has strict biosecurity protocols in place at its hatcheries. Game and Fish establishes new walk-in area for hunting and fishing in Sweetwater County
New walk-in for fishing
In cooperation with several private landowners, Game and Fish has established a new walk-in hunting and fishing area (Sweetwater #3) along the Green River. Historically, private landowners allowed access to their property by sportsmen for hunting and fishing.?**However, problems with littering, camping and abandoning property on those private lands have resulted in the private landowners working with the department to regulate activities. When you're hot, fish are too! Keep them cool with these helpful tips

Due to high temperatures and drought conditions across Wyoming, the state?s streams and rivers are flowing with less water and at a warmer temperature. Game and Fish is asking anglers to adjust fishing practices during the state?s hottest stretch of summer. *Warmer water temperatures can affect fish survival, especially Wyoming?s trout. Due to the recent discovery of invasive zebra mussels in Pactola Reservoir in South Dakota?s Black Hills, Game and Fish, in consultation with True Ranches, has closed LAK Reservoir east of Newcastle to all motorized and nonmotorized watercraft for the remainder of 2022.?*At this time, the reservoir will remain open to anglers for shore and ice fishing. Golden Trout rearing is proving to be successful
Back in 2009, Game and Fish began an experiment to address anglers? search for gold in Wyoming?s backcountry?the gold being Golden Trout. This species is typically found in the state?s more remote areas like the Wind River Mountains, being transported in by helicopter, but in past years you may have seen them in community fisheries like Mavrakis Pond in Sheridan or Sloan?s Lake in Cheyenne. *That?s because the experiment is now a well-tuned process that produces more than 200,000 golden trout eggs each year.
