John,
After a decade of congressional Republican attacks and disinvestment, the IRS is staffing up. But it’s not in the way Republicans want you to believe.
Included in Democrats’ recently passed Inflation Reduction Act is $80 billion over 10 years to modernize the IRS. The money will help everyday taxpayers get our questions answered during tax season, get our refunds paid promptly, and enable the IRS to hire more tax professionals to crack down on millionaire and billionaire tax cheats who avoid paying $160 billion in taxes each year―money they already owe.[1]
Republicans think their lies and scaremongering over IRS funding is going to win them the November election―telling voters that 87,000 new IRS agents will be knocking down their doors and searching for money under their mattresses.
It’s up to us to set the record straight and tell voters how these critical investments will not only benefit ordinary taxpayers, but will finally make millionaires, billionaires and tax-cheating corporations pay what they already owe in taxes under the current system.
Help counter GOP lies by bringing our latest infographic, below, to thousands of people. Pitch in today!
As a result of a decade of budget cuts by congressional Republicans, IRS audits of corporations are down over 50% and audits of millionaires and billionaires are down 70%.[2] Funding included in the Inflation Reduction Act will allow the IRS to hold wealthy tax cheats accountable without increasing the rate of tax audits on people making under $400,000 a year or on small businesses.
As Treasury Secretary Yellen recently wrote to the IRS Commissioner: “contrary to the misinformation from opponents of this legislation, small businesses or households earning $400,000 per year or less will not see an increase in the chances that they are audited.”[3]
Republicans want to continue our rigged tax system to benefit their wealthy and corporate donors. And, they think scaring voters about increased IRS enforcement is the way they’ll do it.
